Weekend Coffee Share 2/25/17

If we were having coffee, we’d be sitting at a table by the window in the sun, basking in it’s warmth like cats.  I’d be drinking my usual mocha–what would you have?

It’s been a really weirdly paced week.  I didn’t work have to be at work on Monday and Tuesday, then was offsite all day Wednesday.  It feels strange for the weekend to be here already, but I’m not complaining.

This afternoon, I’m going shopping with a college friend.  We’ll be visiting thrift stores to see what kind of bargains are to be found.  While I’ll certainly see if I can find any nice clothes, I’m mostly looking forward to seeing what books are out there.  Yes, I work at a library and can get everything free.  Yes, I just bought a bunch of secondhand books on Amazon.  Yes, I own more books than my shelves can handle.  But still… more books please!

Here is the Minnesota State Capitol looking absolutely stunning, as usual!

On Wednesday, I got to be part of the Minnesota Library Association’s annual lobby day at the Minnesota State Capitol.  With a group from work, I spent the day meeting with legislators in St. Paul about library funding.  Thankfully, I didn’t have to do much talking–my bosses handled that part.  By the end of the day, after hearing the speech six times, I could summarize our legislative platform to the point of sounding really, really smart.

Attending the lobby day was a fantastic experience!  I’m a strong believer in the importance of civic engagement and loved playing a hand in the political arena.  It helps that the cause is a good one–libraries are for everyone and serve communities ways that are vital!  Meeting legislators face to face also helped remind me that politicians are actual people–which is something I easily forget.

Also, the Academy Awards are tomorrow!  I’m so excited!  While some may see the Oscars as overpaid entertainers getting patted on the back, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the event.  It’s one of the few nights where film is celebrated not as a way to make money, but as art.  I love peeling back the layers and celebrating achievement in aspects of movies that you don’t often think about–cinematography, sound mixing, etc.  Of course, I do love the glitz and glamour of the night.

Sadly, I didn’t have a chance to see many of this year’s nominees.  It’s hard to see films that only get limited releases when you don’t live in the cities.  Nevertheless, many of them are coming soon to DVD and I am already on the list for them at the library.  I did get to see La La Land, Arrival, and most of the Best Animated Picture candidates.  Still, because I’ve been following the race for the past couple of months, I’m familiar with the ones I haven’t seen.

What film do you think will win big?  My bets are on La La Land, since it’s dominated the awards all season–although I hope it doesn’t win everything it’s nominated for.  I would love to see Moonlight, Fences, and Hidden Figures getting some love as well.
